El uso del bast\u00f3n blanco constituye un s\u00edmbolo a nivel mundial, para identificar a las personas con alguna discapacidad visual.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"newsImage alignright\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rosario.gob.ar\/mr\/epidemiologia\/copy_of_efemerides\/octubre\/15-de-octubre-dia-mundial-del-baston-blanco\/image_mini\" alt=\"15 de Octubre: D\u00eda Mundial del Bast\u00f3n Blanco\" width=\"180\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"plain\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En el a\u00f1o 1925, la Convenci\u00f3n Anual de la Asociaci\u00f3n de Leones cont\u00f3 con la presencia de Hellen Keller, quien sensibiliz\u00f3 a los presentes acerca de las dificultades que deb\u00eda afrontar a diario a causa de su ceguera. En 1930 George Benham, presidente del Club de Leones de Illinois, propuso para uso de los discapacitados visuales un bast\u00f3n blanco con extremo inferior rojo, a fin de que se les otorgue prioridad de paso. La propuesta fue aceptada y en poco tiempo el uso de dicho bast\u00f3n se hizo universal. A su vez Richard Hoover, oftalm\u00f3logo que trabajaba con los veteranos de guerra, observ\u00f3 que los ex soldados ciegos se desplazaban torpemente con bastones gruesos de madera. Investig\u00f3 entonces su marcha, postura, equilibrio y ritmo y en 1946 lleg\u00f3 al dise\u00f1o un bast\u00f3n prototipo, que es utilizado hasta hoy.
